1. In an emergency: what to do

• Call 112 (national emergency response) or 108 (ambulance) — or ask someone nearby to call while you stay with the patient.
• Go to the nearest emergency department, not necessarily the biggest hospital — minutes matter.
• Call the hospital on the way if you can, so the emergency team is ready.
• Carry ID, insurance details and a list of medicines the patient takes.
• For heart attack or stroke symptoms, don't wait — go straight to a hospital with 24x7 emergency.

9. Planned treatment: choosing a hospital

For a planned surgery or specialist treatment, you have time to compare. A few things to consider:

• Ask your doctor which hospital they operate at — specialists usually work with one or two hospitals.
• Get a written cost estimate covering the room category, procedure, implants and expected stay.
• Check cashless approval with your insurer or TPA before admission; ask the hospital's insurance desk for help.
• Visit the hospital's OPD for a consultation first, and ask about visiting hours and attendant rules.
• Distance still matters — for treatments needing many visits (dialysis, physiotherapy, chemotherapy), a hospital closer to home makes the routine easier.

10. Before you need it

• Check your insurer's cashless network — most large hospitals are empanelled with major insurers, but confirm yours.
